With the advance in technology of many cordless phones, it is easy to see why these have overtaken analogue phones as the best home phone.

Thanks for the article. As you point out, it is so important to have a local monitoring station that watches over your account 24/7. A couple other things to find out before contracting with a security company are, 1)what is the operator to account ratio (many companies have one person watching 10,000 accounts), 2) calling a home when an alarm goes off is not verifying an alarm, you want a company that verifies through audio or video technology.

Thank you very much for the article. One thing that I would recommend when looking at a home security provider is to ask key questions such as: what is their "good alarm rate" (dispatches to actual burglaries and not false alarms), what is their monitor to account ratio and what sort of guarantees do they offer.

A scary fact to consider is that about 98% of all burglar alarms are false. It is important to find a company that works hard to prevent false alarms and has a quality "good alarm rate." 40% is generally the best mark you will find in the industry.

Many companies will talk about the advantages of live monitoring. This is a very nice feature to have, without question, but it is important to know just how many accounts each monitor is watching. Many companies will have one monitor watching over 10,000 accounts which almost defeats the purpose of having monitoring at all.

Finally, you should find a company that will offer multiple guarantees to support its’ product. Guarantees such as a satisfaction guarantee, a parts and labor guarantee and false alarm fine guarantee are good indicators of a quality company.

Still, it seems a lot easier to just go to a store and pay for the product. I hate jumping through hoops.
